How to Get Rid of Aphids Without Toxic Chemicals

Garden Betty

Of all the pests that plague gardens throughout the season, aphids are among the most destructive, overwhelming, and frustrating.

As one of the most common garden pests, aphids also come as a surprise each year as it always seems like their populations explode overnight.

If your plants are suffering from an aphid infestation, act fast—and use one of these non-toxic methods for controlling their spread and getting rid of them completely.

Avoid over-fertilizing your plants.

Aphids are drawn to tasty, tender young shoots, so one of the keys to keeping their numbers in check is to avoid over-fertilizing your plants.

Keep your plants well watered.

Plants are more defenseless during hot, dry conditions, as they’re not able to produce the chemicals they need to fend off pests.

Attract beneficial insects to your garden.

Of all the good bugs you should attract to your garden, green lacewings and lady beetles are two of the most powerful and efficient predators to keep around.

Plant a trap crop to attract aphids.

Trap cropping is another form of companion planting as it’s most effective when planted around, or next to, the plants you want to protect.

Use a strong spray of water to knock aphids off your plants.

After all, everyone’s got a garden hose; just aim it directly at the affected leaves and stems to spray the aphids off.
